ROCKTROPOLIS by David Lott The Melvins Ready Three Albums For Mike Patton's Label The Melvins are spending plenty of quality time in the studio these days, recording two albums at the same time. In addition to the upcoming Man's Ruin album, Melvins drummer Dale Crover says the band is in the process of recording three records -- one every four months -- for Faith No More singer Mike Patton's new label, Ipecac Records, which is named after the shrub used medicinally to induce vomiting. For the lowdown on the newly-formed Ipacec Records. The band is presently laying down tracks in the same studio where the Man's Ruin release is being recorded -- Tim Green's Louder Studios in San Francisco. According to Greg Werckman of Pick-A-Hit Management (Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Jello Biafra), who is co-owner of Ipecac (see story, this page) with Patton, the Melvins are halfway through recording the second album. The first of the triology, titled Maggot, is due in May, according to Werckman. "It's sort of a trilogy set," says Crover. "Musically, they'll be completely different." While Crover did not want to reveal any concrete information about the releases, he did say the sound would be traditional "old school" Melvins. "We're doing more heavy stuff like on our earlier albums," says Crover. "Like Lysol [1992's EP on Boner Records]. Mike started this label to put out weird stuff like death metal with Japanese noise. So we'll fit right in."
